Taking a Step of Faith

Matthew 14 recounts the powerful story of Jesus walking on water during a fierce storm, illustrating how we should respond to life’s overwhelming challenges. The disciples found themselves in a perilous situation on the Sea of Galilee – battling waves and wind in darkness, much like the storms we face in life that start small but grow increasingly difficult.Jesus demonstrates several important truths in this passage: He knew the storm was coming yet sent the disciples into it; He was praying while they struggled; and most importantly, He came to them in the midst of their crisis. When Peter boldly asked to join Jesus on the water, he experienced both the miracle of walking on water and the consequence of taking his eyes off Jesus. Even as Peter began to sink, Jesus immediately reached out to rescue him. This story teaches us that the safest place in any storm isn’t in our comfort zone (the boat) but with Jesus. We’re challenged to identify our storms, remember Jesus knows about them, take steps of faith beyond our comfort, keep our eyes fixed on Jesus rather than our circumstances, and worship Him even before seeing resolution. Through this passage, we learn that moments of crisis can become powerful opportunities for faith when we focus on how big our Savior is rather than how big our storm is.
